A new leash and collar
to look your best!
One of the first things your puppy will need is a collar and leash. mini-critters has a great selection of both in all kinds of colors and styles. It's important that your dog have the right sized collar, and the rule of thumb for traditional belt-style collars is to be loose enough to stick two fingers comfortably inside the collar while your dog is wearing it...but it also can't be loose enough to pull off over his head. Many smaller breeds will do better with a harness style of collar that goes around both the neck and the chest. A recent development is the halter collar. This is used when out walking your dog. It has the traditional belt style around the neck, but adds another loop that goes around the dogs' muzzle like a horse halter. When your dog is on a lease and pulls against it, his head will be pulled down and to the side making it difficult to pull you along. The choke-chain collar is a training collar made of chain link that goes over the head and then around the neck. Some people think it's purpose is to choke the dog, but the correct usage is to tug and release it quickly to grab the dog's attention during training. Treats
Treats to satisfy your
dog's chewing instinct
Puppies and grown dogs alike love to chew. Many discount store dog treats contain dangerous chemicals that can affect your dogs health. At mini-critters we stick with healthy chews that are safe for your dog, and often last longer! Pick one that fits your dog's size and strength level...in other words, the bigger the dog, the bigger the treat, and vice-versa. Some treats are designed to help keep your dog's teeth clean and breath smelling better. We've got several varieties and will be glad to discuss them with you. Many treats in this category are very hard nylon based chews that help to remove plaque. Other dog treats are basically meat snacks or dog crackers that are used as a reward for good behavior, but shouldn't be used all the time because they lack the nutrition level that healthier food will have. Toys
We've got dog toys galore!
Dogs love to play and we have the toys they love. We have rubbers toys that are strong enough to chew and play rough or to play interactively. We especially like the KONG toys that are hollow and you can put a treat inside and keep your dog busy for a long time. Vinyl toys are for dogs that aren't big chewers, but virtually all dogs like them because of the squeakers they usually have. Some dogs like to carry plush toys around just like kids do. The good thing about plush toys is that they hold a scent and that leads to longer interest for many dogs. Plush toys often have squeakers or other noise makers in them. Rope toys are good for fetch and tug of war, and some a good for just plain chewing on. Most will last a long time. It's OK to throw them in the washing machine to get them clean (no dryer sheets or fabric softeners please). If you really want to rejuvenate interest in a rope toy, soak it in broth and let it dry before giving it back to the dog. Chances are you won't be playing fetch with it because your dog won't be bringing it back. Coats and Weather Gear
