General Breed Characteristics

The Chihuahua is a true lap dog. They are small and well suited to small homes and apartments. Because of their small size, Chihuahuas are sensitive to cold and don’t mind being dressed in sweaters and coats in cool weather. Despite their small size, they make excellent watch dogs and seem to be completely fearless.

Grown Weight: 5-8 pounds

Temperament: This breed has a reputation as being high strung, something that isn’t necessarily true. Take care to socialize them as puppies and they will be great adult dogs. Chihuahuas often tend to focus their loyalty on just one person and may become jealous of that person’s other relationships. This, combined with their small size, can make the inappropriate for families with small children.

Basic Care: Chihuahuas come in two varieties, short haired and long haired. Both require weekly brushing to control light shedding.
