Aquariums are usually made of glass, although new plastics are available. The plastic tanks are stronger, but are easier to scratch. Innovation in plastic tanks is leading to entirely new shapes and if you're interested in something completely unusual, mini-critters can have it custom made for you! One interesting concept about aquariums is that it is easier to control the water, light and heat in a large aquarium than it is in a small one. So instead of setting up a little 5 or 10 gallon starter tank, you may find it easier to do something in the 30 to 50 gallon size. If you worried about cost, consider that doubling the size of an aquarium doesn't double the cost. On a per-gallon basis, it generally gets cheaper the bigger you go. Aquariums require sturdy stands to hold them. The rule of thumb is that an aquarium will weigh 10 pounds for every gallon of water. It's easy to see why even a 10 gallon aquarium is too heavy for putting on a bookshelf! Until recently, your choice of design for aquarium stands was light or dark stain on a simple wood cabinet. Now, aquarium stands come in many designs and colors. If we don't have a stand that matches your decor, we can order one and have it for in short order. Most stands also have matching tops that can add an even more dramatic look to your tank, while hiding the lighting, pumps and hoses that are required to keep your tank healthy. |
